The concept is to remove the existing “exotic” plants and replace them with more native planting, enhancing the existing woodland, while reducing maintenance requirements. The client’s desire for some exotic species will be accommodated in bespoke woven metal baskets, to provide correct soil mixtures while highlighting them as features within the natural landscape.

Mown lawn pads will be set within a wild flower and native grass meadow. The front entrance to the house will see the rejuvenation of the heritage orchard. The drive itself is a contrast of crushed granite bordered by black river stones, planted with Japanese Maples, Cedrus Deodora, azaleas and ferns. Beneath the forest trees, several species of fern will be planted. The inner courtyard and landscape which flows under the house will be an oasis of moss, ferns, kinnikinnick and pachysandra, transitioning to the flower meadow surrounds, which blossoms throughout fall, spring and summer - reflected in the glass facade of the house.

The strong lines of the house were designed within the context of a rustic landscape; the design of the landscape is choreographed within this setting, framing the house in its setting.
